Andrew Phares
Andrew was born in San Francisco, California in 1973. He attended the California College of Arts and Crafts and graduated with distinction in 1995 with a BFA in the field of Jewelry and Metalworking. He received his MFA in 1997. He pursued jewelry creation based on the idea that it was a craft which left room for subversion. Phares began to make larger work when he discovered that the people who bought his jewelry never wore it but rather put it on display like small sculpture. The Oakland Museum of California has purchased his pieces for its permanent collection and he has taught at California College of the Arts and other institutions. Currently, Phares teaches at a metal working studio in Oakland and works at Bonhams & Butterfields.
