Charles Anselmo

Charles Anselmo, who resides in Redwood City, California, uses the medium of large format photographic prints to evaluate and capture the dissonances, contradictions and beauty that humans impose on the urban landscape. After an initial visit to Havana, Cuba in 2000, Anselmo was drawn by the social, religious and political themes into an incredible and ongoing exploration of Cuba, its people and social fabric. This body of work offers an archeological and metaphorical picture of Havana’s physical forms and spirit.

His photographs document how, for the Cubans, interpreting the past is a political act that informs daily life and sustains a national preoccupation with hope for change. The national cemetery, the barrios and the streets of the working-class districts all engender the ambivalences of the past and the way in which Cuba today is strewn with uncertainties. Charles Anselmo has had solo and group exhibitions throughout California and in New Haven, Connecticut. His work has appeared in Black and White and Focus magazines.
