Estate of Saul White

Saul White (1932-2003), abstract expressionist painter, jazz musician, and beat poet, was born in Boston, the son of working-class Jewish immigrants. In the 1950s, White was a member of the Venice West movement, an important group of beat poets, painters and artists. He moved to New York in 1958 and credited the energy there as his greatest teacher. While living in New York he befriended Franz Kline, lived and studied with Willem de Kooning and showed his work to Leo Castelli, legendary gallery owner and art critic. By working continuosly in the abstact expressionist idiom, Saul was able to refine and thoroughly explore his craft. Spanning more than forty years, Saul’s prolific collection of paintings and poems reflect his unyielding commitment to creative process and exploration. His painting and poetry gave life, verse and form to the ideals of the American abstract expressionist movement. Aftermodern is the exclusive dealer for the Estate of Saul White.
